EFA23 diary: Sophie Mair

Niemand, der nach Alpbach kommt, weiß, was einen hier erwartet. Es ist schwer, diese Erfahrung in Worte zu fassen. Das ist der Versuch, das Europäische Forum Alpbach durch kleine, alltägliche Ausschnitte zu beschreiben.

Aufwachen mit wunderschöner Aussicht. Ein Aperitivo mit der Euregio. Eine kleine 4er-WG. 150 Knödel und 8 Kilo Knödelbrot mit dem Club Alpbach Trentino, zubereitet für den International Bazar, auf dem alle Nationalitäten ihr Land und ihre Spezialitäten vorstellen. Der erste Seminartag: 40 neue Gesichter, ein Lebenslauf beeindruckender als der andere. Das Haus Barbara, unsere Unterkunft. Ein Stille-Post-Spiel, bei dem wir kläglich versagen. „Das rote Pferd“ im Shuttlebus. Vegetarischer Hotdog beim Vürstlstandl. Kaffeepausen (Darf sich diese Plörre überhaupt Kaffee schimpfen?), in denen man sich gefühlt mit der ganzen Welt unterhält. Brütende Hitze. Spritztouren mit unserem Golf Cart. Junge Menschen, die die Welt wirklich verändern wollen und den Optimismus nicht verloren haben. Eine fuchsrot gestreifte Katze, die wir am liebsten adoptieren wollen. Mittelmäßige österreichische Pizza: viel zu teuer, aber manchmal muss es einfach schnell gehen. Gespräche über das „Thrive Festival“ zum Female Empowerment in Südtirol. Ein Maskottchen namens Streuner.

Was sich besonders einprägt, ist, wie schnell eine Gruppe von Fremden zu einer Gemeinschaft zusammenwachsen kann. Bei unserer Ankunft vor einer Woche hatten wir uns alle nur ein einziges Mal gesehen. Jetzt reden wir so miteinander, als ob wir uns ein ganzes Leben lang gekannt hätten. 

Das ist Alpbach.

Cenare tutti insieme. Ballare sudati sulle casse nella Festhütte a Inneralpbach. La musica è assordante, ma l’atmosfera è comunque contagiosa. Un buddy club dell’Iraq. Una performance sull’arte della spontaneità. Scansionare un codice QR per una connection nell’app di EFA. Una ragazza armena che sta disperatamente cercando protezione solare e doposole nel supermercato. Ci chiede il nostro aiuto e il giorno dopo ci ricambia il favore procurandoci dei piatti di cartone durante l’international bazar. La cerimonia inaugurale del forum, dove l’entusiasmo per il progetto è tangibile in tutta la sala. Le stesse domande in continuazione (Oh, where do you come from? What is your background?). I nostri badge, senza i quali è impossibile accedere agli eventi. Yoga mattutino alle 7 con un rappresentante delle forze armate austriache. Il calendario dell’Etiopia dove al momento siamo nel 2015 e l’anno inizia il 1° settembre. Un braccialetto come regalo con la bandiera della Romania. Un fireside chat sulla disobbedienza civile.

Durante uno dei pochi giorni senza un travolgente programma, decidiamo di andare a nuotare nel lago di Reith. Nelle ore più calde del pomeriggio prendiamo il bus e la nuotata porta la rinfrescata desiderata. Dopo una settimana impegnativa di seminari e input continuo, questa piccola pausa è proprio quello che ci serve per ridarci l’energia per i prossimi giorni.

Questo è Alpbach.

Krautinger at 2:30 a.m. (it really doesn’t taste good; you only want to try it once and never again). Redistribute extinction. Meeting strangers on a gondola. Dancing to “99 Luftballons” at Jakober. A climate protest against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline in Uganda and Tanzania. Ukrainians talking about their daily life in light of the Russian aggression. During this, an alarm goes off on one of their phones, indicating that a bombing is happening right this second. Moderating during the talent forum. Being outside of your own comfort zone. A heated discussion about solar geoengineering. Experiencing JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out). Writing an article for salto.bz. Dried cabbage, dates, and mopane worms from Zimbabwe at the international bazar. Three pitches for a better future in the EU: obligatory civic education in schools, civic time-off for employees or lowering the voting age to 16?

Our Iraqi buddy club lent us their virtual reality glasses. Using them, we were able to experience an overwhelming VR journey about the Yezidi genocide by the Islamic State. In the background, I can hear the other club members playing cards and laughing. I, on the other hand, am completely cut off from their reality. Through multiple picture frames, I completely immersive myself in this surreal experience and the story that is told.
